Alexandria VA Bike Rental - Fabulous Cheap Recreation...Alexandria VA is a great place to bike. Even biking around the Old Town area is enjoyable. The traffic moves slowly, because even intersection has a 4-way stop sign. Plus, there are wonderful trails to enjoy, including the Mount Vernon Bike Path (south) from Big Wheel Bikes. (Big Wheel Bikes info follows below)... (The Mt. Vernon Bike Trail is considered an "easy" ride, but I think it gets a little hilly...you probably won't do the whole trail, but if you're in good shape - you'll have no problem)...
The store itself is not much to look at, just a painted brick building on 2 Prince Street, just across the Potomac River and across from one of Alexandria's tour-boats docks. It is also next door to Chadwicks Restaurant, which I highly highly recommend for good cheap eats and for a lively bar scene. (Nice entrees, good sandwiches, etc)... (Unfortunately Chadwicks allows smoking at the bar - one of the last holdouts in Alexandria. I know if you're a smoker, you'll be glad...the good news is there is no smoking in the restaurant). Anyway, back to bike rentals, Big Wheel Bikes is a good place to rent bikes, buy bikes, and the staff is knowledgeable. (I've bought bikes there - and sent people there to rent them, that's why I can give them a good recommendation). Store manager Bennett Moore is very knowledgeable and will share his experience bicycle racing and bicycle commuting. If you're considering serious riding, whether as a mountain biker or triathlete, a conversation with Bennett will be time well-spent. I bought my hybrid city bike there (it's a sweet heart, and called a "breezer bike"). What I like best about this store is that you can count on these guys to give you lots of good advice and NO PRESSURE. Link to Big Wheel Bikes Website Use the Big Wheel Bikes Website to pick up good trail and map ideas. The easiest trail to follow, of course, is the trail from goes North and South along the Potomac River...you'll love it (except it gets crowded!)...but anyway it's interesting and very pretty...
Also in Old Town is another NEW place to rent bikes, Bike and Roll. It's address is Wales Alley. This is just a driveway next to "The Virginia Shop". It's just off of Union StreetIt's less than a block from King Street, and literally just off of Union Street.
