Hotel Monaco Alexandria VA - In 2008 The Kimpton Hotel Chain purchased and renovated what had been "The Old Town Holiday Inn" - it was exciting to see the multi-million transformation.
At last Old Town was getting a chic place to stay. A "boutique" hotel. More sophisticated and "uptown" than the Holiday Inn Select --- which had become a little old-fashioned and threadbare in its furnishings and amentities.
Many people say this hotel is the best location in town. It is centrally located. Just a few blocks walk to the River, and within walking distance of Metro.
Coming in by Airport? - Make it easy on yourself - order the complimentary Airport Shuttle!
How easy could it get? Shuttles run every half hour. And since the airport is only a 10 minute drive away, you'll be comfortable in your Hotel.
Enjoy a fine meal at your Hotel at Jackson's - the hotel's main restaurant. Serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Driving? This is a pet-friendly hotel and a pet-friendly city. Consider bringing your pet. Convenient garage parking available for $20.00 a night.
Hotel Monaco guests with car...note: your must garage-park your car. The City of Alexandria has zoned residential parking and meters, which cannot be "fed".
Like-it-or-not, you will get ticketed, and Alexandria is "good" at collections. So take the hotel up on their parking garage, and use it.
It's an expense you'll just have to tolerate...sorry.
Taking Metro? Hotel Monaco is a L O N G walk from Metro. (About 10 blocks)...do walk if you're up to it...OR take a FREE trolley or a cab...
Walk to the Hotel Monaco if you're up the the exercise and the weather cooperates --- OR hop a FREE ride on Alexandria VA's King Street Trolley.
Hotel Monaco is on King Street, and so is the Metro, so simply walk a block or two out of the Metro's Facility, onto King Street, and wait for a trolley.
You'll be travelling EAST towards the Potomac River.
You could also take a cab. It's a short ride, will cost only a few dollars. It's the most comfortable way to travel...
Take advantage of their competitive rates - and fine accomodations...
Hotel Monaco's rates are very competitive, and there are deals to be had...so check their website and the discount booking services.
You can expect the price to be around $200. Much less, you've found a real bargain. (Summertime rates in 2009 have been as low as around $100)...
There are 241 rooms with free internet, and huge flat screen TVs. There are luxury rooms and suites, some with two levels, and others as big as 1600 square feet!
Overall, the hotel is very impressive. It has an indoor pool, spa, fitness center, a nice restaurant and much more. I don't think you'll be disappointed...
Tuesday and Thursdays - Doggie Happy Hour from 5 - 8 PM - 703-842-2790
Join locals and their furry friends at this fun event in the Hotel's Courtyard.
There's FREE biscuits and water for the dogs - and the humans can order cocktails and food.
Started by the hotel's previous owners, this event has received national recognition --- and one thing I can promise you is this:
People are more friendly when dogs are present. So you'll have a nice time meeting people and their pets...very low key and relaxed...casual.
Wanna bite to eat for breakfast? (Old Town's not-so-great-for breakfast)...
Old Town is lacking in good old-fashioned "diner food". You can't, for example, find a good place in Old Town for bacon and eggs. For that reason, you might want to eat in your hotel OR ---
Try these places for something different and to hang out with some locals:
One block West on your left - La Madeline - 500 King Street 703-739-2854 - A French-style buffet that offers decent coffee and eggs cooked to order. Also a variety of sweets and fruit salad. Outdoor tables, self serve. Popular with families (easy stroller access). (But not a particularly kid-friendly menu)... No reservations. Moderate price considering it's "self serve"...unlimited coffee (and bread and butter)refills...
Two blocks West on your right - Bread and Chocolate - 611 King Street 703-548-0992 - A "European-style" sit down restaurant with counter. Baked goods and hot breakfast, cooked to order. A couple of outdoor tables. Not as good a location as La Madeline, but try it if you're in town for a few days and you want a change. No reservations. Moderate price. Open 7 AM
Three blocks West on your right - Le Pain Quotidien - 702 King Street (corner of King and Washington) 703.683.2273 Open at 8 AM. Try this if your haven't been to a "Le Pain Quotidien" before. It's a cool, Belgian chain, offering high quality baked goods, food, good coffee and unusual communal tables. (There are private tables, also, don't worry...) I like it because they offer hot oatmeal - and it's pretty gosh darn good here. (Not as good as Ireland or what I make at home, but for a restaurant, excellent). No reservations. Not inexpensive. Open 8 AM
Get-in-your-car-breakfast - Table Talk Restaurant - 1623 Duke Street - (703) 548-3989 - Near the Metro Rail Station, just a few blocks from Metro (Duke is two blocks South of King). This is the closest I know of in Old Town to get an old-fashioned "diner" style breakfast. You can order light or heavy. They don't mind if you order just one egg. There is a counter. Good coffee. Owner on premises, old-fashioned style of waitresses. Warning: long line at the door on Sundays. Cramped parking lot. Get there before 9 AM to avoid a wait. Favorite breakfast spot of locals. No reservations. I eat here twice a month. Inexpensive.
